Walter R. Borneman schrijft over de Amerikaanse militaire en politieke geschiedenis. Zijn nieuwste boek, THE ADMIRALS: Nimitz, Halsey, Leahy, and King–The Five-Star Admirals Who Won the War at Sea (Little, Brown, 2012), is het verhaal van de enige vier mannen in de Amerikaanse geschiedenis die de rang van vlootadmiraal hebben bereikt. Samen transformeerden ze de Amerikaanse marine met vliegdekschepen en onderzeeërs en wonnen ze de Tweede Wereldoorlog.Recente titels zijn onder meer POLK: The Man Who Transformed the Presidency and America (Random House, 2008), dat de Tennessee History Book Award en de Colorado Book Award for Biography won, en 1812: The War That Forged a Nation (HarperCollins, 2004). Hij woont in Colorado en heeft vele dagen doorgebracht met het beklimmen van de bergen.
