el Carro Armato M13/40 fue un tanque italiano de la Segunda Guerra Mundial diseñado para reemplazar al M11/39 en el Real Ejército Italiano al comienzo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Fue el principal tanque utilizado por los italianos durante toda la guerra. El diseño fue influenciado por el Vickers británico de 6 toneladas y se basó en el chasis modificado del anterior M11/39. La producción del M11/39 se interrumpió para que el M13/40 entrara en producción. El nombre se refiere a "M" de Medio (medio) de acuerdo con los estándares de peso de los tanques italianos en ese momento, 13 toneladas era el peso programado y 1940 el año inicial de producción.

General Characteristics and Role

The Carro Armato M13/40 was an Italian medium tank used by the Royal Italian Army (Regio Esercito) during World War II. The “M” designated it as a medium tank, “13” indicated its weight in tonnes, and “40” denoted the year it entered service (1940). Although classified as medium, it was closer in capability to Allied light tanks of the time. It represented a major step up from Italy’s previous light tanks and tankettes, but its design was flawed: it used riveted construction instead of welding, which could cause lethal spalling inside the hull when hit. It saw extensive combat in North Africa, where it quickly proved vulnerable to British 2-pounder and 6-pounder anti-tank guns.
