Photo Gallery of a AMX-10RC, The AMX-10RC is a light reconnaissance vehicle built by GIAT. Over 300 are in service in the French Army. In addition, 108 vehicles were sold to Morocco and 12 to Qatar. RC stands for Roues-Canon, or wheeled gun. The AMX-10RC should not be confused with the AMX-10P; they share automotive components but otherwise have completely different battlefield roles. The AMX-10RC is amphibious and has very good mobility. It is usually used for reconnaissance missions in dangerous environments or for fire support.

General Characteristics and Role

The AMX 10 RCR is a heavily modernized version of the French AMX 10 RC (Roues-Cannon). It is a wheeled armored reconnaissance and fire support vehicle designed for rapid deployment and high strategic mobility. Unlike traditional main battle tanks (MBTs), the AMX 10 RCR, with its 6×6 configuration, emphasizes speed, long-range road movement, and versatility. Its primary roles include armored reconnaissance, flank protection, and providing direct fire support to infantry units, particularly in low-intensity conflicts or rapid reaction missions. The RCR (Rénové-Caméléon-Roues) upgrade introduced crucial systems including add-on armor, a new transmission, digital communication systems, and a variable-height hydropneumatic suspension, significantly improving its combat effectiveness and survivability.

Powerplant and Firepower

  • Engine: 1 x Baudouin Diesel Model 6F11 SRX (with RCR upgrade).
  • Engine Power: 275 hp (205 kW).
  • Drive: 6×6 (All-wheel drive).
  • Maximum Road Speed: 85 km/h (53 mph).
  • Main Armament: 1 x 105 mm F2 L/47 medium-pressure gun (firing APFSDS, HE, and HEAT rounds). The lower recoil allows for the use of this potent gun on a relatively light wheeled chassis.
  • Secondary Armament: 1 x 7.62 mm AA-52 or MAG 58 coaxial machine gun.
  • Suspension: Hydropneumatic suspension system, which allows the driver to adjust the ground clearance and even tilt the hull for better gun depression or elevation.
  • Protection: Aluminum alloy hull with the addition of modular extra armor kits (the “Caméléon” aspect).

Service History and Legacy

  • Original Concept: The AMX 10 RC was unique in its class, designed specifically for rapid mobility, combining the speed of a wheeled vehicle with the firepower traditionally reserved for light tanks.
  • Major Campaigns: The vehicle has been widely used by the French Army in numerous overseas deployments, including the Gulf War, the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Mali (Operation Serval and Barkhane).
  • RCR Upgrade Success: The RCR refurbishment program successfully extended the service life of the fleet by decades, notably enhancing protection against IEDs and small-caliber weapons through new modular armor packages.
  • International Users: It is also operated by Morocco and Qatar, demonstrating its suitability for various climates and operational doctrines.
  • Future Replacement: The AMX 10 RCR is slated to be gradually replaced in French service by the newer, more advanced EBRC Jaguar reconnaissance and combat vehicle as part of the French Army’s SCORPION modernization program.
