BTR-90 (GAZ-5923) (Russian: бронетранспортёр, romanized: Bronetransportyor, lit. ’Armoured Transporter’) is an 8×8 wheeled armored personnel carrier developed in Russia, designed in 1993 and first shown publicly in 1994. It is a larger version of the BTR-80 vehicle, fitted with a BMP-2 turret.

The BTR-90, also known as the GAZ-5923 or “Rostok,” is a Russian 8×8 wheeled armored personnel carrier (APC). It was designed in the early 1990s as a successor to the BTR-80, aiming for significant improvements in firepower, protection, and mobility. Despite being accepted into service by the Russian Army in 2008, it **never entered mass production** due to a shift in military priorities and funding issues. It was eventually superseded by the BTR-82A and the newer Bumerang vehicle.
Key Features and Design
The BTR-90 is a larger version of the BTR-80, with a distinctive pointed “arrowhead” front hull design. This design, made of welded steel, provides improved protection, particularly against 14.5 mm projectiles over the frontal arc. It’s fully amphibious and propelled in water by two water jets at the rear, reaching a speed of up to 9 km/h. Its powerful 510 hp multi-fuel diesel engine and automatic hydro-mechanical transmission give it a top road speed of 100 km/h. The transmission also provides power to each side of the vehicle, allowing for a low turning radius and enhanced maneuverability.

The BTR-90’s armament is one of its most notable features, as it’s equipped with a complete turret from the BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle. This provides it with a formidable weapons suite, including:
- A 30 mm 2A42 autocannon
- A coaxial 7.62 mm PKT machine gun
- A 30 mm AGS-17 automatic grenade launcher

This combination of weapons allows the BTR-90 to engage a wide variety of targets, from enemy infantry and light armored vehicles to helicopters and even main battle tanks.

Although the BTR-90 was officially adopted, only a very limited number of prototypes and pre-production models were ever built, with estimates ranging from around 12 to 80 units. These vehicles were mainly used for testing and by internal security forces. The Russian Ministry of Defence ultimately decided not to include the BTR-90 in its state armament program, and its lack of domestic orders effectively ended its export prospects. This makes the BTR-90 a rare vehicle, a “paper project” that briefly came to life but was never widely deployed.
