The **M109A3GN** (German-Norwegian) is a significantly modernized and localized variant of the American **M109** 155mm self-propelled howitzer family. This tracked, armored artillery piece was the primary indirect fire support weapon for the Norwegian Army for several decades.

Design and Upgrades

The A3GN is based on the M109A3 platform, which was derived from early M109 models, but incorporates national Norwegian and inherited German modifications (“GN”). The key upgrade focused on dramatically increasing the howitzer’s firing range:

  • **Main Gun:** The original short barrel was replaced with a much longer **155 mm L/39** caliber cannon. This extension is the most defining feature and provides superior ballistics.
  • **Enhanced Range:** The L/39 barrel allows the system to achieve a maximum range of approximately **24 km** using standard high-explosive rounds, which can be extended to up to **30 km** using rocket-assisted or base-bleed ammunition.
  • **Breech Mechanism:** It features a breech mechanism inherited from the German M109G variant (a wedge-type breech), differing from the screw-type breech of standard US models.
  • **Ammunition & Rate of Fire:** The vehicle carries ammunition for the main gun, with a maximum rate of fire of around 4 rounds per minute.
