The M75 APC was an armored personnel carrier developed by the United States in the early 1950s. It was based on the chassis of the M41 light tank and had a welded steel hull that could protect the crew and passengers from small arms fire and shell fragments. The M75 APC could carry ten infantrymen in the rear compartment, along with their weapons and equipment. The vehicle was armed with a .50 caliber machine gun mounted on a cupola for the commander, who had a 360-degree view of the surroundings. The driver was located in the front left of the hull, next to the air-cooled gasoline engine that provided 295 horsepower.
The M75 APC had a torsion bar suspension and five road wheels on each side, giving it good mobility and cross-country performance. The M75 APC saw service in the Korean War, where it was used to transport troops and supplies in combat zones. It was also used for ceremonial purposes, such as transferring the original United States’ Declaration of Independence and Constitution to the National Archives in 1952. The M75 APC was replaced by the smaller, cheaper and amphibious M59 in the late 1950s, but some were given to Belgium and Morocco as military aid. The M75 APC was one of the first mass-produced American armored personnel carriers and paved the way for the development of later models such as the M113.
