Ο Ε. Β. "Βαριοπούλα" SLEDGE γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στο Μόμπαϊλ. Στα τέλη του 1943 κατατάχθηκε στο Σώμα Πεζοναυτών των ΗΠΑ. Μετά τη βασική εκπαίδευση, στάλθηκε στο Θέατρο του Ειρηνικού όπου πολέμησε στο Peleliu και την Okinawa, δύο από τις πιο σκληρές μάχες του Β 'Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Μετά την παράδοση της Ιαπωνίας, ο Sledge υπηρέτησε στην Κίνα ως μέρος της δύναμης κατοχής. Με την επιστροφή του στην πατρίδα, απέκτησε διδακτορικό στη βιολογία και εντάχθηκε στο διδακτικό προσωπικό του Alabama College (αργότερα του Πανεπιστημίου του Montevallo), όπου δίδαξε μέχρι τη συνταξιοδότησή του.
