Η λειτουργία Barbarossa (en allemand, Unternehmen Barbarossa), nommée en référence à l’empereur Frédéric Barberousse, est le nom de code désignant l’invasion par le IIIe Reich de l’Union des républiques socialistes soviétiques (URSS) pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Déclenchée le 22 juin 1941, un an jour pour jour après la signature de l’armistice entre la France et le IIIe Reich, elle ouvre le front de l’Est qui devient le principal théâtre d’opérations de la guerre terrestre en Europe (de 1941 à 1945, 80 % des pertes de la Wehrmacht sont subies sur le front russe1) et le facteur crucial dans le succès ou la défaite du Troisième Reich nazi. Ce front va être le théâtre des plus grandes et des plus sanglantes batailles terrestres de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Cette invasion marque aussi un tournant dans la guerre, jusqu’alors encore assez localisée et européenne. Elle va bientôt embraser le monde entier.

Le T-34 est un char moyen entré en service en 1940 au sein de l’armée rouge. Il constitue à l’époque un remarquable équilibre entre les trois facteurs majeurs qui définissent la qualité d’un blindé, à savoir : la puissance de feu, la protection et la mobilité. Cette réussite en fait l’un des atouts de l’Union soviétique face à l’invasion de la Wehrmacht. Celle-ci devra d’ailleurs, pour le contrer, revoir sa politique de conception de blindés en mettant au point, par exemple, le Panzer-V ‘Panther’, qui empruntait une partie de ses caractéristiques techniques au T-34. Bien que rapidement dépassé lui même par les productions étrangères, le T-34 va tout de même rester en production de 1940 à 1958, avec un total d’unités produites estimé à 84 070 exemplaires, ce qui en fait le second char le plus produit de tous les temps, juste derrière ses successeurs, les T-54 et T-55.

The BA-64 was a 4×4 light armoured car, employed by the Soviet Army from 1942 into the early 1960s for reconnaissance and liaison tasks. The BA-64B was nicknamed ‘Bobik’ by its crews. The total recorded number of BA-64s produced differs even in Russian sources. The most frequently-stated figures are 9,110 (3,901 BA-64 and 5,209 BA-64B) vehicles which were built in the GAZ automobile plant, although a memorial plaque near the pictured Nizhny Novgorod car states 9,063 cars. The Red Army representatives accepted only 8,174 BA-64s, including 3,390 with radio sets; the other vehicles were transferred to NKVD units and Soviet allies.

Teh Sonderkraftfahrzeug 8 was a German half-track that saw widespread use in World War II. Its main roles were as a prime mover for heavy towed guns such as the 21 cm Mörser 18, the 15 cm Kanone 18 and the 10.5 cm FlaK 38. Approximately 4,000 were produced between 1938 and 1945. It was used in every campaign fought by the Germans in World War II, notably the Invasion of Poland, the Battle of France, the Balkans Campaign, the Eastern Front, the North African Campaign, the Battle of Normandy and the Italian Campaign.

Teh Υπερμαρίνη Attacker was a British single-seat naval jet fighter built by Supermarine for the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm (FAA). It was the FAA’s first jet fighter. The first production Attacker F.1 flew on 5 May 1950 and operational service began in August 1951 with No 800 Squadron FAA. Subsequent versions were the FB.1 fighter-bomber with provision for underwing ordnance and the FB.2 which differed mainly in its Nene Mk.102 engine. The Attacker served with only two FAA front line squadrons and had been relegated to Volunteer Reserve units by 1954 and retired two years later. Between 1952 and 1953, 36 Attackers were sold to the Pakistani Air Force (PAF). The aircraft was replaced in the PAF in the 1960s.

Μετά το τέλος του Α ́ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, το Γερμανικό Ναυτικό επινόησε την ιδέα του Panzerschiffe, ή θωρηκτό τσέπης, ως μέθοδο παράκαμψης των περιορισμών της συνθήκης σχετικά με το μέγεθος και τους τύπους των πλοίων που επιτρεπόταν στη Γερμανία να κατασκευάσει. Νέες, πιο σύγχρονες μέθοδοι παραγωγής, όπου η συγκολλημένη κατασκευή υπερίσχυσε της παλαιότερης διαδικασίας πριτσινίσματος, συνδυάστηκαν με την ανάπτυξη σύγχρονων κινητήρων ικανών για γρήγορες ταχύτητες και πολύ ισχυρό οπλισμό, πολύ ανώτερο από αυτόν οποιουδήποτε εχθρικού καταδρομικού. Αυτό το βιβλίο καλύπτει αυτά τα τρία αδελφά πλοία, το «Deutschland», το «Admiral Graf Spee» και το «Admiral Scheer», τα οποία αποτέλεσαν τον πυρήνα της μαχητικής δύναμης της Kriegsmarine κατά την έναρξη του Β 'Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου.
