Versions of the BM-24 have been mounted on the ZIL-151 6×6 Truck chassis and the AT-S tracked artillery tractor, forming the BM-24T from the latter. Production began out of Automotive Factory no. 2 in 1947 Moscow.

The BM-24 was used by various countries in different conflicts, such as the Yom Kippur War and the 1982 Lebanon War. The BM-24 has a range of about 10 km and can deliver a devastating barrage of high-explosive rockets in a short time. The BM-24 is also known as the MRL 240 or the Katyusha 240, after the famous Soviet rocket launcher of World War II.
