It was developed in the 1960s as a variant of the FV101 Scorpion, with a 30 mm RARDEN cannon instead of a 76 mm gun. The Scimitar has a crew of three: a driver, a commander and a gunner. It can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h on roads and 50 km/h cross-country. It has an operational range of 450 km and can be transported by air.
The Scimitar is designed to provide fire support and reconnaissance for armoured and infantry units. It has a low profile and high mobility, making it suitable for operating in various terrains and environments. The Scimitar is equipped with a thermal imaging system, a laser rangefinder and a smoke grenade launcher for self-defence. The Scimitar can also mount additional equipment such as a bulldozer blade, a mine plough or an explosive reactive armour kit.
