The British Aerospace Harrier II is a second-generation vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) jet aircraft used previously by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and, between 2006 and 2010, the Royal Navy (RN). The aircraft was the latest development of the Harrier Jump Jet family, and was derived from the McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II. The Harrier II participated in numerous conflicts, making significant contributions in combat theatres such as Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
The Harrier II was an improved version of the original Harrier GR1/GR3 series that entered service with the RAF in 1969. The main differences were the use of a more powerful Rolls-Royce Pegasus engine with more thrust and better fuel efficiency, a larger wing with increased payload and range, a redesigned fuselage and cockpit with improved avionics and night vision capability, and a radar system for air-to-air and air-to-ground targeting. The Harrier II also had a higher top speed, ceiling, and rate of climb than its predecessor.
The Harrier II was first flown in 1981 and entered service with the RAF in 1984. It replaced the Hawker Siddeley Harrier in the close air support, reconnaissance and ground attack roles. The Harrier II also operated from the aircraft carriers HMS Invincible and HMS Illustrious as part of the Joint Force Harrier. The RAF retired its last Harrier IIs in 2010, following the Strategic Defence and Security Review. The aircraft were sold to the US Marine Corps, which continues to operate them as AV-8B Harrier IIs.
