У 201 Westland Lysander (nickname the ‘Lizzie’) was a British army co-operation and liaison aircraft produced by Westland Aircraft used immediately before and during the Second World War. After becoming obsolete in the army co-operation role, the aircraft’s exceptional short-field performance enabled clandestine missions using small, improvised airstrips behind enemy lines to place or recover agents, particularly in occupied France with the help of the French Resistance. British army air co-operation aircraft were named after mythical or historical military leaders; in this case the Spartan general Lysander was chosen.

The Westland Lysander was a British army co-operation and liaison aircraft produced by Westland Aircraft. It was used during the Second World War for various missions, such as reconnaissance, artillery spotting, air-sea rescue, and clandestine operations. The Lysander had a distinctive appearance, with a high-wing monoplane design, a fixed undercarriage with spats, and a large glazed cockpit that offered excellent visibility for the pilot and observer. The Lysander was also known for its exceptional short take-off and landing (STOL) performance, which enabled it to operate from small and improvised airstrips. The Lysander was named after the Spartan general Lysander, who was famous for his diplomatic skills and unconventional warfare tactics.
