The Mil Mi-26 is a heavy-lift helicopter that was developed by the Soviet Union and is currently operated by Russia and other countries. It has the NATO reporting name of Halo and the product code of Izdeliye 90. It is the largest and most powerful helicopter in serial production, with a maximum takeoff weight of 56 tons and a payload capacity of 20 tons. It can carry up to 80 soldiers or 85 passengers in its spacious cabin, or various types of military and civilian equipment, such as armored vehicles, mobile ballistic missiles, fire-fighting tanks, cranes and even other helicopters. The Mi-26 has a single eight-blade main rotor and two Lotarev D-136 turboshaft engines that produce 11,399 horsepower each. It has a cruise speed of 265 km/h and a range of 590 km. The Mi-26 was first flown on 14 December 1977 and entered service in 1983. It has set several world records, including lifting a payload of 56,769 kg to an altitude of 2,000 meters. The Mi-26 has several variants for different roles, such as transport, firefighting, medical evacuation, fuel tanking and disaster relief. The Mi-26 is a remarkable helicopter that demonstrates the engineering capabilities of Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant, the design bureau that created it.
