Conceived as a replacement for the two heavy motorcycles used by the Red Army—the TIZ-AM-600 and PMZ-A-750—both of which had performed unsatisfactorily during the Winter War with Finland and were considered outdated designs. The replacement chosen was the BMW R 71 which had been rejected by the Wehrmacht as a replacement for the R 12. As a result of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact the necessary legal, political and economic procedures were in place for BMW to provide the design, tooling and training for the manufacture of the motorcycle and military sidecar.

Dnepr M-72 var en motorcykelmodell som härstammar från Sovjetunionen på 1940-talet. Den baserades på designen av BMW R71, som förvärvades av sovjeterna genom ett handelsavtal med nazistiska Tyskland. Dnepr M-72 användes av Röda armén som ett militärt fordon under andra världskriget och senare av civila för olika ändamål. Dnepr M-72 hade en sidovagn fäst vid den, vilket ökade stabiliteten och lastkapaciteten. Motorn var en fyrtakts, luftkyld, flat-twin med sidoventiler och en slagvolym på 750 cc.
Dnepr M-72 producerades av flera fabriker på olika platser, såsom Moskva, Irbit, Gorky och Kiev. Produktionen av Dnepr M-72 varade fram till 1960, då den ersattes av nyare modeller som M-72N och Ural. Dnepr M-72 exporterades också till Kina, där den fortsatte att tillverkas fram till mitten av 1980-talet under namnet Chang Jiang. Dnepr M-72 anses vara en klassisk motorcykel som har en lojal fanbas bland samlare och entusiaster.
