The de Havilland Vampire was a British jet fighter developed and manufactured by the de Havilland Aircraft Company. It was the second jet fighter to enter service with the Royal Air Force (RAF), after the Gloster Meteor, and the first to be powered by a single jet engine. The Vampire had a distinctive twin-boom design and a composite wood and metal construction. It was originally designed to operate from small aircraft carriers, but also proved to be successful as a land-based fighter and a trainer.
The Vampire made its first flight in September 1943 and entered service with the RAF in 1946. It was exported to many countries and served with various air forces until the 1980s. It was also adapted for several roles, such as night fighter, ground attack, reconnaissance, and naval fighter. The Vampire was the first jet aircraft to cross the Atlantic Ocean, the first jet to land on an aircraft carrier, and the first jet to take off from a carrier using a catapult. It also set several speed and altitude records.
The Vampire was a versatile and reliable aircraft that played an important role in the early years of jet aviation. It demonstrated the potential of jet propulsion and paved the way for more advanced designs. The Vampire was also a significant achievement for de Havilland, which became one of the leading manufacturers of jet aircraft in Britain.
