Komisia Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar is a passenger transport aircraft of the World War II era. When the United States started to build up its military air strength in 1940–41, many American-operated Lodestars were impressed as the C-56. This was followed by the construction of many new-build Lodestars which were flown by the U.S. Army Air Forces as the C-60 and by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps as the R5O. Lend-lease aircraft were used by the RNZAF as transports.

Viac info:

The Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar was a twin-engine passenger and cargo aircraft developed by Lockheed Corporation in the late 1930s. It was based on the earlier Model 14 Super Electra, but with a longer fuselage and more powerful engines. The Lodestar was designed to compete with the Douglas DC-3, which dominated the commercial aviation market at the time. However, the Lodestar failed to attract many customers in the United States, as most airlines preferred the DC-3 for its lower operating costs and greater range. Only 31 Lodestars were sold to civil operators in the US, while another 96 were exported to foreign customers.
The Lodestar found more success as a military transport aircraft during World War II, as it was faster and had a higher payload capacity than the DC-3. The US Army Air Forces (USAAF) designated it as the C-56, C-57, C-59, or C-60, depending on the engine type and configuration. The US Navy and Marine Corps used it as the R5O. The Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) also operated several variants of the Lodestar under the name Hudson Mk VI. The Lodestar served in various roles, such as VIP transport, cargo transport, troop transport, ambulance, reconnaissance, and training. Some Lodestars were also converted into bombers or gunships by adding bomb racks or machine guns.
The Lodestar was retired from military service after the war, but some continued to fly with civil operators until the 1960s. Some were also preserved in museums or restored for air shows. The Lodestar was one of the first aircraft to use Lockheed’s famous “star” logo on its tail. It was also one of the last Lockheed aircraft to use a conventional tailwheel landing gear, as later models switched to a tricycle gear. The Lodestar was a versatile and reliable aircraft that played an important role in aviation history.
