The North American FJ-1 Fury was the first operational jet fighter aircraft developed by North American Aviation for the United States Navy. The FJ-1 was a single-seat, single-engine fighter with a low-wing monoplane design and a straight wing. The FJ-1 was powered by an Allison J35 turbojet engine that produced 4,000 pounds of thrust. The FJ-1 had a maximum speed of 547 mph and a range of 1,200 miles. The FJ-1 was armed with six 0.50-inch machine guns and could carry up to 2,000 pounds of bombs or rockets.
The FJ-1 was designed in response to a Navy requirement for a jet fighter that could operate from existing aircraft carriers. The FJ-1 made its first flight on November 11, 1946 and entered service in March 1948. The FJ-1 was assigned to Fighter Squadron 5A (VF-5A) based at Naval Air Station North Island, California. The FJ-1 was the first jet fighter to land on and take off from an aircraft carrier, the USS Boxer, on July 21, 1948.
The FJ-1 was soon replaced by the more advanced FJ-2 and FJ-3 Fury models, which had swept wings and more powerful engines. The FJ-1 was retired from active service in 1953 and transferred to the Naval Reserve. Only 31 FJ-1s were built and none are preserved today.
