USS Stockdale (DDG-106) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer in the United States Navy. The ship was named after Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale, a Medal of Honor recipient and former prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. USS Stockdale was commissioned on 18 April 2009 at Naval Base Ventura County in Port Hueneme, California. The ship’s motto is “Return with Honor”.
USS Stockdale is equipped with the Aegis combat system, which enables the ship to track and engage multiple air, surface and subsurface targets simultaneously. The ship also carries a variety of weapons, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, Standard surface-to-air missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Phalanx close-in weapon system, torpedoes and a 5-inch gun. USS Stockdale also has two SH-60 Seahawk helicopters for anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and other missions.
USS Stockdale has participated in several operations and exercises since its commissioning, such as Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Inherent Resolve, Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC), Malabar and Valiant Shield. The ship has also conducted freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, as well as port visits to various countries in the Indo-Pacific region. USS Stockdale is currently assigned to Destroyer Squadron 21 and homeported at Naval Base San Diego.
