The M8 Armored Gun System is a light tank developed by the United States in the 1990s. It was designed to provide fire support and reconnaissance for airborne and light infantry units. The M8 features a 105 mm rifled cannon, a 12.7 mm machine gun, and a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun. The M8 has a crew of three: a commander, a gunner, and a driver. The M8 has a maximum speed of 72 km/h and a range of 450 km.
The M8 is equipped with advanced sensors, communications, and fire control systems. The M8 can be transported by C-130 Hercules aircraft or CH-47 Chinook helicopters. The M8 was intended to replace the M551 Sheridan in the US Army, but the program was canceled in 1997 due to budget cuts and changing requirements. The M8 was later offered for export to several countries, but none of them ordered the vehicle. The M8 remains a prototype that never entered service.
