It was first observed by the west in 1954. There is also a Chinese copy, called Type 59. For many years, the M-46 was one of the longest range artillery systems around, with a range of more than 27 km.

The 130 mm towed field gun M1954 (M-46) is a Soviet artillery piece that was developed in the late 1940s and entered service in 1954. It is a long-range gun that can fire various types of ammunition, including high-explosive, armor-piercing, smoke, and nuclear shells. The M-46 has a maximum range of 27.5 km with conventional ammunition and 38 km with rocket-assisted projectiles. The gun has a split-trail carriage that allows for a wide traverse angle and a quick deployment. The M-46 is operated by a crew of eight and can fire up to six rounds per minute. The M-46 was widely exported to various countries and saw combat in several conflicts, such as the Suez Crisis, the Vietnam War, the Indo-Pakistani Wars, the Iran-Iraq War, and the Gulf War.
