The Vickers VC10 was a British jet airliner that first flew in 1962 and was produced until 1970. It was designed to operate on long-distance routes from the shorter runways of the era and had excellent performance in hot and high conditions. The VC10 had four engines mounted at the rear of the fuselage, which gave it a distinctive appearance and reduced cabin noise.
The VC10 was mainly used by BOAC and some African and Middle Eastern airlines, as well as by the Royal Air Force as a transport and tanker aircraft. The VC10 was a sophisticated, reliable and comfortable aircraft for its time, but it did not achieve commercial success due to competition from other airliners and changing market conditions. The VC10 set a record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic by a subsonic jet airliner, which lasted for 41 years until 2020. The VC10 was retired from RAF service in 2013 and is now a part of aviation history.
