Tthe IT-1 (Russian: Истребитель танков–1 – ‘Istrebitel tankov–1’, lit. ‘tank destroyer-1′) was a Soviet cold war missile tank based on the hull of the T-62. The tank fired specially designed 3M7 Drakon missiles from a pop-up launcher. It saw a very limited service between 1968 and 1970. The large deadzone around the tank created by the missiles’ minimum range combined with the limited amount of ammunition carried made it unpopular with the military. Also, the 520 kg of guidance equipment needed for the missile was impractical. Eventually, the tanks were converted into recovery vehicles. A turbine-powered version was also developed named the IT-1T.

The IT-1 Missile Tank was a Soviet tank destroyer that was designed and built in the 1960s. It was based on the T-62 chassis and armed with a single 3M7 Drakon missile launcher. The IT-1 could fire anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) at a range of up to 3 km, and had a secondary machine gun for close defense. The IT-1 was intended to provide long-range fire support for tank units, and to engage enemy tanks from a safe distance. However, the IT-1 had several drawbacks that limited its effectiveness and service life. The missile launcher had a long reload time and required the tank to expose its turret to fire. The missiles were vulnerable to electronic countermeasures and had poor accuracy in bad weather conditions. The IT-1 also had a low ammunition capacity of only 15 missiles, and a high cost of maintenance and operation. The IT-1 was produced in small numbers from 1968 to 1970, and was withdrawn from service by the late 1970s. It was replaced by more conventional tank destroyers such as the SU-100P and the BMP-1.
