It was the first of the three V bombers to become operational, and the first to drop an atomic bomb. The Valiant had a distinctive crescent-shaped wing that gave it high speed and long range. It was also capable of performing other roles, such as aerial refueling, reconnaissance, and low-level bombing. The Valiant was retired in 1965 after a series of fatigue failures caused by its low-level missions over the tropics.
