Fue creado por el diseñador de artillería soviético M.N. Loginov después del arresto y ejecución del ex diseñador V. von Behring. Debido a la insuficiente penetración del blindaje, fue reemplazado en servicio por el cañón antitanque de cañón largo de 45 mm M1942 (M-42).
