Teh Δημοκρατία F-105 Thunderchief was a supersonic fighter-bomber used by the United States Air Force. The Mach 2 capable F-105 conducted the majority of strike bombing missions during the early years of the Vietnam War; it was the only U.S. aircraft to have been removed from combat due to high loss rates. Originally designed as a single-seat, nuclear-attack aircraft, a two-seat Wild Weasel version was later developed for the specialized Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) role against surface-to-air missile sites. The F-105 was commonly known as the “Thud” by its crews.

Περισσότερες πληροφορίες:

The Republic F-105 Thunderchief was a supersonic fighter-bomber that served with the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1984. It was designed by Republic Aviation as a single-seat, nuclear-attack aircraft, capable of penetrating enemy territory at low altitude and high speed. It was also equipped with a rotary cannon and various missiles and bombs for conventional warfare. The F-105 was one of the main aircraft used in the Vietnam War, where it performed both bombing and suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) missions. The F-105 was nicknamed “Thud” by its crews, and it was the largest single-engine combat aircraft in history. It could reach Mach 2 at high altitude and carry up to 14,000 lb of weapons. The F-105 was later replaced by more advanced aircraft such as the F-4 Phantom II and the F-111 Aardvark.
