The ASU-57 was a Soviet airborne assault gun that entered service in 1951. It was designed to be air-dropped by parachute along with the VDV (Vozdushno-Desantnye Voyska), the Soviet airborne forces. It was armed with a 57 mm gun Ch-51, which was a modified version of the ZIS-2 anti-tank gun. The ASU-57 had very thin armour, only 6 mm at the front and 4 mm at the sides, and no roof. It was vulnerable to machine gun fire and aircraft strafing. However, it was very light and agile, weighing only 3.4 tons and reaching a top speed of 45 km/h. It had a crew of three and could carry six additional paratroopers. The ASU-57 was used in several conflicts, such as the Six-Day War, the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia and the Ogaden War. It was gradually replaced by the more powerful ASU-85 in the 1960s.
