The Mil Mi-4 is a Soviet transport helicopter that served in both military and civilian roles. It was designed in response to the American H-19 Chickasaw and the deployment of U.S. helicopters during the Korean War. The Mi-4 first flew in June 1952 and entered service in 1953. It was widely used by the Soviet Air Force, the Polish Air Force, and other countries of the Soviet bloc and China.
The Mi-4 had a distinctive engine position in front of the cockpit, and could carry up to 16 passengers or various cargo. It was also armed with machine guns, rockets, bombs, or anti-tank missiles. The Mi-4 was replaced by the Mi-8 in the 1960s and 1970s, but remained in limited service in some countries until the 2000s. The Mi-4 was also known by its NATO reporting name “Hound” and its USAF/DoD reporting name “Type 36”.
