The Type 63 was widely used in the PLA until the late 1980s. It was adopted as the successor of the Type 50-5 of 102mm. China has also developed a Type 63 multiple rocket launcher of 130mm. The BM-14 is a Soviet 140mm MRL of similar design to the Type 63.

The Type 63 130mm multiple rocket launcher is a Chinese weapon system that can fire 19 rockets in a single salvo. It is mounted on a Nanjing NJ-230 truck, which is a Chinese copy of the Soviet GAZ-63 truck. The Type 63 130mm MRL has a range of about 10 km and can deliver high-explosive or incendiary warheads. The Type 63 130mm MRL was developed in the 1960s and exported to several countries, including Iran, Sudan, and North Korea. It is similar to the Soviet BM-14 MRL, but has a smaller caliber and more launch tubes.
