She was the seventh ship of the United States Navy to be named in honor of the sixth state, and one of two ships of her class (along with her sister Alabama) to be donated for use as a museum ship. Massachusetts has the distinction of having fired the US Navy’s first and last 16-in (406 mm) shells of the war.

The USS Massachusetts BB-59 was a fast battleship of the South Dakota class that served in the US Navy during World War II. It was launched in 1941 and commissioned in 1942. It fought in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters, engaging the French battleship Jean Bart at Casablanca and participating in the campaigns of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Honshu. It was decommissioned in 1947 and became a museum ship at Battleship Cove in Fall River, Massachusetts, where it remains today.
