The Ryan Firebee is a series of jet-propelled target drones that were developed by the Ryan Aeronautical Company starting from 1951. The Firebee drones were used by the United States Air Force, Navy and Army, as well as the Canadian Armed Forces, for various purposes such as gunnery training, reconnaissance and electronic warfare. One of the most notable models of the Firebee series was the BQM-34A, which was introduced in 1960 and had a swept-wing design, a circular nose inlet and a Continental J69-T-19B turbojet engine. The BQM-34A could be launched from the air by a modified aircraft or from the ground by a rocket booster.
The Firebee drones were controlled remotely by an operator on the ground or in a chase plane, and could perform various maneuvers and evasive actions. The Firebee drones were also equipped with cameras, sensors, parachutes and self-destruct devices. The Firebee drones were widely used during the Vietnam War and the Cold War, and some variants are still in service today.
