Le Leopardo 2 is a main battle tank developed by Krauss-Maffei in the 1970s for the West German Army. The tank first entered service in 1979 and succeeded the earlier Leopard 1 as the main battle tank of the German Army. Various versions have served in the armed forces of Germany and 12 other European countries, as well as several non-European nations. More than 3,480 Leopard 2s have been manufactured.[citation needed] The Leopard 2 was used in Kosovo with the German Army and has also seen action in Afghanistan with the Danish and Canadian contributions to the International Security Assistance Force. The 2A4 was also license manufactured in Switzerland as the Panzer 87 "Leopardo" o Pz 87. Il Pz87 è un carro armato sviluppato e prodotto dalla Svizzera alla fine degli anni 1980. Si basa sul carro armato tedesco Leopard 2, ma con diverse modifiche e miglioramenti per adattarsi al terreno e alle esigenze svizzere. Il Pz87 ha un cannone a canna liscia da 120 mm, una mitragliatrice coassiale da 7,5 mm e una mitragliatrice antiaerea da 12,7 mm. Ha anche un sofisticato sistema di controllo del fuoco, imaging termico, telemetro laser e lanciagranate fumogene. Il Pz87 ha un equipaggio di quattro persone: comandante, mitragliere, caricatore e autista. Il serbatoio è alimentato da un motore diesel da 1.500 CV e può raggiungere una velocità massima di 68 km/h su strada e 45 km/h fuoristrada. Il Pz87 ha un peso di combattimento di 53,4 tonnellate e un'autonomia di 500 km. Il Pz87 è progettato per operare in ambienti montani e urbani, nonché in condizioni di freddo e bagnato.
