The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a carrier-based fighter aircraft that served in the United States Navy and Marine Corps during World War II. It was designed to replace the earlier F4F Wildcat and to counter the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero. The Hellcat proved to be a formidable adversary for the Zero, achieving a kill ratio of 19:1 in aerial combat. The Hellcat was also versatile and adaptable, performing well in various roles such as fighter-bomber, night fighter, and torpedo bomber. The Hellcat was the most produced aircraft in naval history, with 12,275 units built by the end of the war. It was also one of the most successful fighter aircraft of all time, with 5,223 confirmed kills and 305 aces credited to its pilots.
