A Convair B-36 “Peacemaker” was a strategic bomber built by Convair and operated solely by the United States Air Force (USAF) from 1949 to 1959. The B-36 was the largest mass-produced piston engine aircraft ever made. It had the longest wingspan of any combat aircraft ever built, at 230 ft (70.1 m). The B-36 was the first bomber capable of delivering any of the nuclear weapons in the U.S. arsenal from inside its four bomb bays without aircraft modifications. With a range of 10,000 mi (16,000 km) and a maximum payload of 87,200 lb (39,600 kg), the B-36 was the world’s first manned bomber capable of intercontinental flight without refuelling.

További információ:

The Convair B-36 Peacemaker was a strategic bomber designed and built by the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It was the largest mass-produced piston-engine aircraft ever made, and had the longest wingspan of any combat aircraft ever built. The B-36 was capable of delivering nuclear or conventional weapons to any target in the world, and had a range of over 10,000 miles without refueling. The B-36 was the first bomber to have intercontinental capability, and was the mainstay of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) during the early years of the Cold War. The B-36 was also notable for its six pusher propellers and four jet engines, which gave it a unique sound and appearance. The B-36 was retired from service in 1959, after being replaced by more advanced jet bombers such as the B-52 Stratofortress.
