The Stampe SV.4 is a classic biplane that was designed and built in Belgium by Stampe et Vertongen, a company founded by Jean Stampe and Maurice Vertongen. The SV.4 was intended as a trainer and tourer aircraft, capable of aerobatics and cross-country flights. The first prototype flew in 1933, powered by a Renault 4P engine. The SV.4A was the first production version, with improved aerodynamics and a stronger structure. The SV.4B followed, with a de Havilland Gipsy Major engine and modified wings.
The SV.4 was popular among pilots and flying clubs, but its production was interrupted by the Second World War. After the war, Stampe et Vertongen resumed the production of the SV.4B for the Belgian Air Force, which used it as a primary trainer until 1975. The SV.4 also attracted interest from France, where it was built under license by SNCAN and AIA as the SV.4C, with a Renault 4Pei engine. The French military and civil aviation used the SV.4C extensively for training, touring and aerobatics. Some of the French-built SV.4Cs were exported to other countries, including the United Kingdom.
The Stampe SV.4 is regarded as one of the most elegant and graceful biplanes ever made. It has a distinctive silhouette, with a rounded fuselage, a large radial engine and a staggered wing configuration. The SV.4 is also known for its excellent handling and performance, especially in aerobatics. Many pilots have praised its responsiveness, stability and maneuverability. The SV.4 has been used by several aerobatic teams and performers, such as the Rothmans Aerobatic Team, Léon Biancotto and Jean d’Orgeix.
Today, the Stampe SV.4 is a cherished vintage aircraft that is still flown by enthusiasts and collectors around the world. It is often seen at airshows and fly-ins, where it attracts admiration and nostalgia from the public and other pilots. The SV.4 is also a popular subject for modelers and restorers, who appreciate its beauty and history. The Stampe SV.4 is a true legend of aviation, a biplane that has inspired generations of pilots and lovers of flying.
