das Nordamerika A-36 Apache (in einigen Quellen als "Invader" aufgeführt, aber auch Mustang genannt) war die Bodenangriffs- / Sturzkampfbomberversion der North American P-51 Mustang, von der sie durch das Vorhandensein von rechteckigen, lattenförmigen Tauchbremsen über und unter den Flügeln unterschieden werden konnte. Insgesamt 500 A-36 Sturzkampfbomber dienten während des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Nordafrika, im Mittelmeerraum, in Italien und im chinesisch-burmesisch-indischen Kriegsschauplatz, bevor sie 1944 aus dem operativen Einsatz genommen wurden.

The North American A-36A Apache was a ground-attack variant of the P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft. It was developed for the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and saw service in North Africa, Italy, and the China-Burma-India theater. The A-36A had a reinforced airframe and dive brakes to enable it to perform steep dive bombing attacks. It was armed with six 0.50 caliber machine guns in the wings and two 500-pound bombs under the wings or fuselage. The A-36A was also capable of carrying rockets or drop tanks for increased range.
The A-36A was nicknamed “Invader” by its crews, but it was also known as “Mustang” or “Apache”.
